Indigenous knowledge and early warning systems in the Lower Shire Valley in Malawi

The overall objective of this study is to understand and document the indigenous early warning signs for most common hazards (i.e. floods, droughts and dry spells) in the Lower Shire Valley. The study explores what indigenous early warning signs are available within communities, how these are shared within the community and if and how they are being used in preparing for and reducing the impacts of disasters. This research is part of the Result area 2 on strengthening and institutionalising the Early Warning/Early Action capacity of the EU ECHO Action Enhancing resilience of vulnerable communities and building institutional disaster response capacity in Phalombe, Thyolo, Chikwawa and Nsanje (Malawi).
